About praying

All through history, in all religions and in all parts of the world, people have always prayed. People pray to communicate with the mystery that gives meaning to their lives. For Catholics, this mystery is God, revealed to us in the person of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Praying can be:

  • Just being open to feeling the presence of God in a joyful moment.
  • Sitting quietly alone and 'spending time' with God.
  • Joining with others to pray.

Our prayers together as Catholics can be:

  • Family grace before meals
  • In small groups in any place, such as school or workplace
  • Celebrating the Mass on Sunday
  • Special days of celebration throughout the year
  • Through the sacraments

Praying together is essential to Catholics. Whenever we gather with others, it is 'in the name of Jesus. Gathering together lets us feel that we are part of 'the body of Christ'. We see ourselves as part of a body of believers that extends beyond those physically gathered in one place.

Our Catholic prayer has these characteristics, which are inspired by the teachings in the Bible:

  • Praise
  • Unity
  • Forgiveness
  • Mission

Praying together illuminates our relationship with one another within a much bigger context: our relationship with God.
